HERTSMI-2 Calculator

Enter the five mold numbers from your ERMI or HERTSMI-2 lab report. This tool adds them up into a single score that tells you whether a building is likely safe to live in if you are sensitive to mold.

First time doing this? Read these three lines.

  1. Find your lab report — the one from an ERMI or HERTSMI-2 dust test. Both reports work; HERTSMI-2 uses five of the species an ERMI already measures.
  2. Look for the column headed Spore E./mg — spore equivalents per milligram of dust. Copy that number, not the ERMI index and not a log value.
  3. Type each of the five numbers below. If a species came back as not detected, enter 0.

Enter all five numbers from your report above. A HERTSMI-2 score only means something when every one of the five species is accounted for.

Why the five species score differently

Each species is scored against its own scale, because they are not equally harmful. Stachybotrys hits the maximum ten points above roughly 125, while Wallemia needs more than 2,500 to do the same. That is why a big-looking Wallemia number can barely move your total.

Units are spore equivalents per milligram of dust. Thresholds as published in the HERTSMI-2 scorecard (Surviving Mold, 2014).

For information only. This calculator reproduces a published scoring system and is not a medical device, a diagnosis, or a substitute for advice from your practitioner or a qualified mold inspector. Scores are guidelines, not guarantees: sensitive people sometimes react in low-scoring buildings, and this test measures only five species. Decisions about where to live or what to remediate should be made with a professional who knows your case.
